ProArteDanza proudly presents Season 2013 October 2 to 5, 2013 With choreography by Roberto Campanella, Robert Glumbek and Guillaume Ct Toronto, September 5, 2013 – The award winning ProArteDanza returns to Fleck Dance Theatre with its Season 2013, featuring the world premiere of Beethoven’s 9th – 3rd Movement, choreographed by ProArteDanza Artistic Director Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek; the critically acclaimed Fractals: a pattern of chaos, choreographed by National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Guillaume Ct; and the North American premiere of Shifting Silence, choreographed by Robert Glumbek. This outstanding evening of dance runs four nights only – October 2-5 – at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre as part NextSteps. Artistic Director Roberto Campanella, a former soloist with the National Ballet of Canada, brings together the worlds of both classical ballet and contemporary dance, blending beauty and all-out athleticism with an ensemble of some of Toronto’s most accomplished, high-octane, sought-after dancers: Valerie Calam, Justin De Luna, Tyler Gledhill, Mami Hata, Benjamin Landsberg, Ryan Lee, Delphine Leroux, Erin Poole and Anisa Tejpar. Beethoven’s 9th – 3rd Movement (World Premiere) Choreography: Roberto Campanella and Robert Glumbek Music: Symphony No. 9, Op. 125: 3rd Movement by Ludwig van Beethoven Lighting Design: Oz Weaver Dancers: Justin DeLuna, Tyler Gledhill, Mami Hata, Benjamin Landsberg, Ryan Lee, Delphine Leroux, Erin Poole, Anisa Tejpar. As a highlight of the 2013 Season, Campanella and Glumbeck’s Beethoven’s 9th – 3rd Movement builds on the great success of their previous choreography to the 1st movement of Beethoven’s famous 9th Symphony. Working with this musical masterpiece is a daunting task; but the choreographers believe the physicality of ProArteDanza’s choreography pairs perfectly with Beethoven’s masterpiece. The goal is to create movement that makes the music visible. Beethoven’s 9th – 3rd Movement is the second installment in Campanella and Glumbek’s long-term project to produce a full-length feature work in homage to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. “We have quite consciously skipped the 2nd movement” for the time being, notes Campanella. “The first movement featured fast, dynamic dance. The third movement is slower and, as we see it, more lyrical. ProArteDanze premiered this Dora Award-nominated ensemble work in 2011 by National Ballet of Canada principal dancer and choreographer Guillaume Ct. It is inspired by the occurrence of fractals – most easily understood as similar shapes on different scales – and how unpredictable elements from everyday life, such as a drop of rain or a gust of warm air, can influence the formation of fractals. “The ambitious Fractals: a pattern of chaos, set to the dense electronica music of Venetian Snares, moves almost faster than the eye. … The piece is both dizzying and dazzling.” – Paula Citron, Globe and Mail Shifting Silence (2012) North American premiere Choreography: Robert Glumbek Music: Johann Sebastian Bach, Senking Original Lighting Design: Damian Chmielarz Adapted Lighting Design: Oz Weaver Dancers: Ben Landsberg, Anisa Tejapar, Delphine Leroux, Erin Poole, Mami Hata, Tyler Gledhill, Ryan Lee Glumbek created and premiered this work in Germany for Kevin O’Day Ballett Nationaltheater Mannheim where he previously danced. “When we cannot bear to be alone, it means we do not properly value the only companion we will have from birth to death.” – Eda LeShan. ProArteDanza began in 2004 as a collaborative venture between Artistic Director Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek to found a company committed to breaking down the barriers between the worlds of ballet and modern dance and to showcase the brightest talents from both as it pushes the boundaries of technical skill and artistic expression. Campanella and Glumbek won the 2011 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography for their piece …in between… . Roberto Campanella – Artistic Director / Choreographer Born and raised in Rome, Roberto Campanella trained at the Scuola Italiana di Danza Contemporanea. In 1985, Campanella joined the Compagnia Italiana di Danza Contemporanea and later joined the prestigious Aterballetto. In 1993 he joined The National Ballet of Canada where he was soon promoted to soloist and was cast in many classical and contemporary roles, making his choreographic debut in 1995. Today, he is a sought-after guest teacher for companies such as The National Ballet of Canada and Stuttgart Ballet, as well as companies in Italy, Korea and Japan. Robert Glumbek – Artistic Associate / Choreographer As a soloist at The Great Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Warsaw, Polish-born Robert Glumbek collaborated with choreographers such as John Neumeier and Maurice Bejart, among others. He came to Canada in 1987 but returned to Europe to work with Kevin O’Day Ballett Nationaltheater Mannheim as a dancer and ballet master from 2002-2004. In Canada, he has worked with such choreographers as Bill James, Peter Chin, Dominique Dumais, Christopher House, Serge Bennathan, Holly Small and Tedd Robinson. Glumbek has been honoured with both the K.M. Hunter Artist Award and the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award. Guillaume Ct – Choreographer A native of Lac-Saint-Jean, Qubec, Guillaume Ct was promoted to Principal Dancer at The National Ballet of Canada in 2004 and since then, has become the leading man of the company and an international star in the world of dance. Ct is also an award-winning choreographer and composer and holds the title of Choreographic Associate at the National Ballet of Canada, the first to hold this position.
