TINARS and Douglas & McIntyre are proud to present the launch of Grant Lawrences second book, The Lonely End of the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie (Douglas & McIntyre, $26.95). Part memoir, part hockey history, Lawrences book is a side-splitting account of how hockey has played into various periods of his life, whether it was when he was a knee-brace-wearing bully-magnet, a rock star, or a CBC radio host. This witty and personal book is a quintessential story about hockey and the cultural lives of Canadians. In addition to being a beer-league goalie, Grant Lawrence hosts the popular CBC Radio 3 Podcast with Grant Lawrence and Grant Lawrence Live on CBC Radio 3 and Sirius XM 152. He can also be heard on various CBC One programs including DNTO, All Points West, and On the Coast. His first book, Adventures in Solitude: What Not to Wear to a Nude Potluck and Other Stories from Desolation Sound, was shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Writers Trust Nonfiction Prize and the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction. Kevin Sylvesteralso a goalieis a sports broadcaster with CBC Radio, a writer and an illustrator. He has been with CBC National Radio Sports for over a decade. During his tenure, he has been a reporter, producer, documentary-maker, writer and host. Kevin has produced a number of documentaries for the CBC Radio’s The Inside Track, including “Black Ice”, about racism in hockey. He’s also written two radio plays, “Rink of the Living Dead” and Shadrin has Scored for Russia”a spoof of the 1972 summit series between Canada and Russia. His book of the same title was nominated for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour in 2002. Sylvesters other books include the award-winning Neil Flambe series, Sports Hall of Weird, Gold Medal for Weird, Game Day: Meet the People Who Make Sports Happen, and Showtime: Meet the People Behind the Scenes. Matthew Barber is you guessed it a goalie! He is also a singer-songwriter from Toronto who has released seven albums over the past decade and toured extensively across Canada with inroads into Europe, the US and Australia. Equally at home as a solo performer or with a band, Barbers music is inspired largely by the great songwriters of the 20th century North American folk/blues/rocknroll and country tradition. His albums include Ghost Notes (2008), which was nominated for a Juno award; Matthew Barber (2011), which was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award; and Songs For The Haunted Hillbilly which features twelve songs written for a theatrical production based on a book by Derek McCormack and produced by Montreals Sidemart Theatrical Grocery. Barber won a Montreal English Theatre Critics award (MECCA) for his music in the show and the show itself won the MECCA for Best Production in 2010.
