The National Ballet of Canadas Innovation series presents four exceptional Canadian choreographers, three world premieres and one new work in an eclectic programme of dance. This season the series features the outstanding and singular talents of Jos Navas, Guillaume Ct, Robert Binet, and James Kudelka. Venezuelan-born and Montral-based Jos Navas is the founder of Compagnie Flak. He has choreographed over 30 ballets for both stage and film, touring his works extensively. Mr. Navas new work, Watershed, is set to music from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten. This year marks the centenary of Brittens birth. The work features costumes by Sonya Bayer and lighting by Jeff Logue based on original concepts by James F. Ingalls. Best known to audiences of the National Ballet as one of the companys Principal Dancers, Guillaume Ct is also a choreographer and was recently named Choreographic Associate. Being and Nothingness (Part 1) is a solo work featuring Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson, with music by Philip Glass, costumes by Corps de Ballet member Krista Dowson and lighting by Mr. Logue based on original concepts by Mr. Ingalls. Being and Nothingness (Part 1) was recently performed by Ms. Hodgkinson at the Festival Ballet Providences all-star gala in Rhode Island. Choreographic Associate Robert Binet is a Toronto native and a graduate of Canada’s National Ballet School. His new ballet, Unearth, features an original score by award-winning composer and violinist Owen Pallett. Also known as Final Fantasy, Mr. Pallett has performed with such artists as Arcade Fire, Duran Duran and Franz Ferdinand. Sets and costumes are by Hyemi Shin and lighting by Mr. Logue based on original concepts by Mr. Ingalls. James Kudelka, former Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Canada, creates his first new work for the National Ballet since 2005. black nights bright day is set to Pergolesis Stabat Mater, featuring vocals by soprano Dame Emma Kirkby and countertenor Daniel Taylor, with countertenor David Trudgen performing with Ms. Kirkby on November 27. Costumes are by Mr. Kudelkas long-time collaborators Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell of Toronto-based label Hoax Couture and lighting by Mr. Logue based on original concepts by Mr. Ingalls.
