First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica (Santa Monica, CA)
By the end of the 16th century, Orlandus Lassus was one of the most famous and influential musicians and composers in Europe. His singing voice was said to be so beautiful that as a child it caused him to be kidnapped three times, and as an adult he wrote three-fifths of the music published in Europe in the second half of the 16th century. As a young man, he joined the court of the Duke of Bavaria and there he composed some of his greatest works. During Lassus’ time in Bavaria, Mary was a central figure in the local’s religious worship, and many of his religious works center around her. This all-Lassus program examines the sweep of Munich’s Mary-mania with a full cycle of religious verse set to music. The music chosen represents a full spectrum of the music Lassus wrote in Bavaria, from his arrival in Munich to his later years in the city.
