Featuring ISA Trio: Jacques Israelievitch (violin), Benjamin Smith (piano) and Jihyun Ahn (cello).

ISA trio revisits the Belle Époque, a period following the Great Depression from 1880 and ending when World War I began in 1914. This period was characterized by social, economic, technological and political improvements. It is, al least, the idyllic vision in thinking in contrast to the horrors of World War I. In retrospect, the Belle Époque was named, shading off upheavals, inconsistencies and challenges of a period that produced the twentieth century.

Musically, the Belle Époque was characterized by Faure, Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Ravel, but also by Italians in Paris –Albeniz, Granados or Manuel de Falla. Famous salons in Paris animate this vibrant art life, such as Countess Greffulhe’s salon, Princess Cystria’s, Misia’s or even Madame de Saint-Marceaux’s. The first music festivals emerge in the south of France, like the one in the ancient theater of Orange or the one in Béziers’ arenas where spectaculars shows were organized –for example Déjanire by Saint-Saëns or Héliogabale by Séverac.

Additionally, it is in Paris that French and international composers presented their works, music productions considered so much scandalous to fit in with tradition. Thus, Claude Debussy has to face the most acerbic critics for Pelléas and Mélisande as well as for Martyre from saint Sébastien.
