William Turner Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)
Thanks to the signature simplistic style and ironic humor of his single-panel cartoons in The New Yorker, Bruce Eric Kaplan — also known as BEK — has become one of the nation’s most celebrated cartoonists. Kaplan comes to Santa Monica’s William Turner Gallery to discuss his new illustration-filled memoir I Was a Child with actor-writer B.J. Novak. In his book, the artist includes childhood anecdotes like, “I loved TV. I wanted to crawl in the TV and stay there permanently.” Not surprisingly, Kaplan grew up to also become an acclaimed screenwriter and producer for shows like Seinfeld, Six Feet Under and Girls. The evening’s host has an acclaimed TV background of his own. Novak is best known for his work on the Emmy-winning comedy series The Office, for which he was a writer, actor, director and executive producer. He’s also starred in big screen productions like Inglourious Basterds and Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks. Novak’s also a bestselling author and his work has been published in The New Yorker as well. The witty pair will chat about TV, humor and writing in this Live Talks L.A. conversation.
