Hudson Mainstage Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
In 1948, a decade before Motown, black businessman John Dolphin opened his soon-to-be world-famous Dolphin’s of Hollywood record store in South Central Los Angeles. Dolphin would launch hits such as Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me,” The Penguins’ “Earth Angel” and “Wheel of Fortune” by The Hollywood Flames. He would also go on white radio station KRKD and market black music to whites. White kids would pack the Dolphin’s of Hollywood record shop in the all-black neighborhood, bringing the races together during a time of segregation — and leading to increasing tension with the LAPD. Dolphin’s immense contribution to the music scene is little-known, but now in Recorded in Hollywood, starring Stu James (RENT, The Color Purple), you can experience Dolphin’s life through the iconic music he produced and the tense racial atmosphere he produced it in. Pay tribute to the man who brought us some of the best music of the 1950s and learn more about his fascinating life and tragic death at Hudson Mainstage Theatre in Hollywood.
