Devils and demons descend on Toronto’s historic Heliconian Hall this October 28, as composer Robert Bruce presents a screening of the 1926 silent film, F.W. Murnau’s Faust. His live original piano score brings this classic German horror flick to life for a modern audience, just in time for Halloween.

All Hell breaks loose as the demon Mephisto (Emil Jannings) seeks to corrupt the righteous man, Faust (Gösta Ekman), and gain dominion over earth. Faust draws on the mythic legend of the man who sells his soul to the devil. Known for its elaborate and stylized special effects, Faust is regarded as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. “[Murnau’s films] are strange and haunted.” wrote Roger Ebert. “If such satanic dealings were possible, they would probably look like this.”

Since the late 1970’s, composer/pianist Robert Bruce has developed a diverse catalogue of original music that includes a widely used piano repertoire for students, music for film, television and animation, piano works, ensemble and orchestral works, and visual art collaborations. He has performed hundreds of live shows with his original piano scores for silent films across Canada and the United States.
