Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA)
Over the past three years, Tunisian artist Emel Mathlouthi has played everywhere from France to Turkey to Australia, sharing her spirited protest songs with the world. Now, she makes her California debut at L.A.’s Skirball Cultural Center. Described by NPR as “an arresting cross between Joan Baez and Björk,” Mathlouthi blends Middle Eastern instrumentation, rock, electronica and trip-hop to stunning effect. The singer-songwriter first gained attention when her protest song “Kelmti Horra (My Word Is Free)” was adopted by revolutionaries and sung in the streets of Tunis in 2010, eventually becoming an anthem across the Arab Spring. With her dynamic vocal range and politically conscious lyrics, Mathlouthi’s music is spellbinding. Before she takes the stage, catch a DJ set by Los Angeles-based collective Discostan.
