The unassuming storefront at 402 College Street has long served as the studio space for local artist Rochelle Rubinstein who transformed its front window into the Mon Ton Gallery, exhibiting eye-catching artwork from fellow Toronto artists and animating a nondescript stretch of street into a space for contemporary art. Rubinstein, a member and dedicated supporter of the downtown grassroots progressive Jewish community, Makom, recently relocated her studio, making way for the nomadic group (whose name means “place” in Hebrew) to finally have a place of its own.

Continuing Rubinstein’s tradition, two active members of the Makom community — architect / artist Joanne Frisch and curator / artist Evelyn Tauben — created an installation for the storefront window. As Makom moves into the space, the Jewish community is moving towards a seminal holiday with a massive move at its core — Passover.

During the Passover seder, the festival holiday meal, edible items on the seder plate act as tactile cues for telling the story of the Exodus from Egypt. These foods embody themes of oppression, freedom, and the vitality of life and the spring season. Inspired by a holiday defined by asking questions, Frisch and Tauben teamed up to design an installation exploring six new questions for passers-by to chew on, each related to the ceremonial seder plate foods.

Makom is a joyous, grassroots community, building traditional and progressive Jewish life in downtown Toronto.
