It was way back in 2008 when Prachi Desai made her big screen debut with Rock On. The film worked in major cities with the multiplex audience and over the years, it has managed cult following for itself. Eight years have passed by since the release of Rock On and now Rock On 2, the film’s sequel, is her eight film since then. While she has enjoyed successes like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Bol Bachchan in the interim period, there have also been disappointments like I, Me Aur Main and Policegiri. Meanwhile, this year’s release Azhar has just about managed to scrape through. We get chatting with the pretty young girl.

This year you have two films to your name. Azhar has released and Rock On 2 is round the corner.
Yes, these two films are drastically different and a far cry from each other. In Azhar, I was this Muslim girl from a conservative family in Hyderabad. On the other hand Rock On was a film which was ahead of its time and now the sequel is special as well. It is one of those rare stories which is based on rock music and something that has not been explored before. Rock On brought rock culture to some extent in this country and now Rock On 2 will make it all the more special. Hopefully, audience would see my versatility in the film as well.

Compared to your peers who came around the same time as you, you have done much lesser films though, isn’t it?
I think the film industry is a huge family business. That’s the way it was, that’s the way it is and that’s the way it is going to be. For outsiders like us, you have to relentlessly go over and over and over again till manage to be in the position of someone like a Vidya Balan or Kangna Ranaut who have achieved huge acclaim, accolades and commercial success. They were fabulous to begin with as well but we are recognizing and acknowledging them now. It is a constant fight. They fought it well; I am also trying it out.

What happens next from here?
I am planning to do this particular film which is nothing like I have done before. It is a far cry from my earlier characters. It is pretty exciting because audience will see a completely different me now. As an actor, this time period is the most important and crucial for me. Of course, I won’t do anything trivial or frivolous just for the sake for it.
