Thank the Saudi’s for cheap gas and a cool saving on the Gibson Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition Guitar

By Stephen Pate – The Gibson Bob Dylan Player’s Edition J-200 just got more affordable thanks to the sinking Canadian dollar.  You can also save money by getting a second market guitar.

You can pick up one of the last two guitars in Canada for US $4,442, landed at your door. In the USA, the Gibson Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition Acoustic-Electric will cost $4,999 at Amazon.com or anywhere else you check.

How does that magic work? The dealer stock in Canada was purchased in December before the Canadian dollar dropped to $0.80 American.  If you live in Europe the price of the guitar will be € 3,857 EU and the street price in Europe between €3,990 and € 4,150.

The Saudi government is flooding the world market with cheap oil and that is killing the Canadian dollar since we export so much oil to the USA.

Canadian dealers have not adjusted their prices on Gibson, Fender and other musical equipment but they will do it soon. When the price goes up the savings will evaporate. I expect the prices to go up in Canada within a week or two. Some of the smaller dealers are announcing it already.

The same thing happened years ago when Americans were coming to Canada to buy cars that were cheaper in Canada.

I bought a Gibson Bob Dylan Player’s Edition J-200 with a small discount at Christmas. It is truly an amazing guitar.

First I am a Bob Dylan fan and have a reasonable collection of Bob Dylan records, CD’s, videos, books and swag from the concerts. Second, I played a standard J-200 belonging to a friend and was wowed. It sounded so big and full which is due to the maple back and sides.

Third I watched this video from Greg Koch of Wildwood Guitars  – Amazing Sound From Gibson Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition – heard the guitar and saw the nonplussed look on his face. Greg actually likes the Player’s Edition more than the signed $10,000 Bob Dylan J-200.

“The SJ-200 Player’s Edition is a high-performance model based on Bob Dylan’s personal guitar. This model is constructed with Adirondack red spruce and hand-selected AAA flamed maple. Featuring vintage style hide glue top bracing.”

Fourth reason to buy the guitar – I love to collect great guitars and sold my Gibson Woody Guthrie to a guy two years ago and had sellers remorse every since. Nothing worse than a hole in your heart over a lost guitar. It’s almost enough to inspire a new country song.

What’s the risk of buying in Canada? None. There is no duty since the guitar was made in the States. The dealer has been top notch on service for other issues and I am very comfortable with them and the distributor Yorkville, who are one of Gibson’s biggest customers.

So thank the Saudi’s for cheap gas and a cool saving on the Gibson Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition Guitar.

Amazon.com is selling the same guitar for US $4,999 and has one left. New stock is expected to arrive in April 2015. Here’s the link for Amazon.com – Gibson Bob Dylan SJ-200 Player’s Edition Acoustic-Electric.

I wrote so many stories about this guitar – my current love affair – and you can find them linked below.

If you are interested in the Gibson – Bob Dylan Signed SJ-200, email me at stepate at gmail.com and I will see if there is one in Canada. It would land in the USA at $8,900 an $1,100 saving over the US street price.
