The recent clashes in Pan-miir of Ajakleer in Tonj North County has affected citizens from the three counties of the former Tonj District, bringing fear of a bigger security collapse and a major threat to Warrap State government.

The latest conflict was said to have been ignited by youths from Thiik Community of Tonj East Countyagainst Leer Community of Tonj North in a suspected revenge action for their son who was earlier on killed by unknown gunman in an area called Katkol.

A number of fatal disputes had been on-going since last year among Thiik and Leer Communities, taking lives of citizens from both sides and therefore Thiik’s youth alleged that the unknown gunman might have been from Tonj North.

Speaking on phone from Kuacjok, the area representative in Thiik, who is also the Speaker for Warrap State Legislative Assembly, confirmed the attack and said that more than ten people have died and that the state security personnel are in the process of quelling the situation in the area.

The clashes took place on Monday, Sept 22, 2014 and tension is reported high in the affected areas. Warrap Parliament’s Speaker, Hon. Moses Madoot Dut verified: “Yes, the clashes have occurred three days ago. Seven youth from Thiik have attacked Pan-miir cattle camp in Leer of Tonj North County, killing ten people on the spot at night.  These ten people are as follows: 5 from Tonj South County, 4 from Tonj North County and 1 person from Tonj East County in Luanyjang area.

“As you can see it has touched and affected the three Tonj’s counties. These five people from Tonj South and 1 person from Tonj East have been living in Tonj North and were not intended to be killed but stray bullets have affected them, I think,” he added.

Speaker Madoot added that the youth from Leer community have followed the attackers and killed a woman in Akok Tek community and one young man from Thiik Community, both citizens of Tonj East, making the death toll to be 12 people dead and seven more wounded.

The attackers are said to been seven, of which one is killed and the remaining six people were all arrested and now in custody in Tonj East County waiting for investigation, according to Hon. Madoot. If such clashes continue Greater Tonj will be in total chaos within itself across the three counties.

Hon. Madoot urged all the communities to refrain from killing each other and reconcile among themselves tomake peace return to the war-torn region.

In the last two weeks there was another deadly conflict between the two clans of Wun-Thuc and Wun-Adel, both citizens of Luanyjang area in Tonj East, over the dispute over a girl’s elopement in the cattle camp.
