Tow chief environmental groups of Canada have asked the federal government to review the allowance of using 30 pesticide chemicals which are banned by several other countries, as they find them to be posing risks to people’s environment and to health.
This Monday, a firm representing the David Suzuki Foundation and Equiterre, Ecojustice, filed a request with the Health Minister, Leona Aglukkaq, for commencing a review on the chemicals. The firm asserts that these chemicals are easily found and accessible in roughly 700 registered domestic and agricultural pesticide products. The Director Science and Policy at the David Suzuki Foundation, Mara Kerry, mentioned that “there’s some very strong evidence to suggest that these substances used in pest control substances are harming humans and wildlife and the environment.” He said that “I think it’s important that Canadians are aware of what is being used out there in the forests and the agricultural lands in this country, and the potential risks.”
He implied that as science and technology is advancing, there are imminent new evidences to reveal how certain products are disturbing the environment and human health, which we did not know before. He cautioned that it’s important to keep a regular review. Kerry said “It’s time to review them again here in Canada, and bring to light the best evidence.” “The worst are those chemicals that are potentially carcinogenic. It can affect human users – even bystanders, in certain case, with some of the herbicides.”
