48-year-old Tom Podivinsky, a Calgary geophysicist and married father of two, died while skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana Sunday afternoon. He is elder brother of famous Canadian Skier, Edi Podivinsky, who won a bronze medal in skiing at the 1994 Olympic Games in Lillehammer.
According to The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office report, Tom and his friends were skiing on the backside of the resort at around 12:30 p.m. before they separated. When Tom’s friends failed to meet his party as planned, the group reported him missing to the ski patrol at around 1 p.m., soon after which they located him in a tree well but were unable to revive him. Tom’s father, Edward Podivinsky, remembers his son as an avid skier who enrolled in ski racing as a youth and enjoyed cat-skiing and heli-skiing trips as an adult.
