Staff, management and the owner of a popular Montreal bar, Bar Saint-Sulpice, have been accused of homophobia after a controversial event of kicking out two men from the bar who were kissing. The incident took place at one of the most busies hot spot in Montreal’s Latin Quarter, where the students from the Universite de Montreal were holding an orientation party on Friday night.

One of the students kicked out, Gabriel Dion, explained that everyone in the bar was drunk and several couples were kissing. However, he explained that while the rest of the couples were left alone, he was singled out for kissing another man. He mentioned that “we started making out, and hugging each other and that’s it,” adding that they moved into a stairway for privacy. He elucidated that “we definitely know some people are not comfortable with that, especially in a straight bar, so we tried to be as discreet as possible. But then a security guard came in and just told us to leave.” He added that the bouncer did not even allow them to get their bags before leaving. He stressed that “I definitely felt disrespected. I felt that there was a lot of prejudice, basically.”

Whereas in addition to that, spokesperson for the federation representing student associations at the University of Montreal, Vincent Fournier Gosselin, has also announced that the group is shocked by Dion’s experience and wants an apology from the bar. He mentioned that “we were shocked. I think it’s completely, completely inappropriate. It’s not an acceptable behaviour, so that was our first reaction.”
