The PC leadership voting has finally concluded and the results are expected in the late afternoon. In case none of the candidates receive more than 50 per cent of the votes, there will be a second ballot. Consequently, since approximately 686 votes have been casted, the magic number to become premier of the province is 344 votes or more.

Before the voting took place, each candidate was allowed to make a final speech to delegates. The speech delivered by John Ottenheimer had a hard message, which reminded Tories that that they’ve alienated the people of Newfoundland and Labrador in recent years. He urged that in case they want any hope of holding government in the 2015 election that needs to change. Ottenheimer highlighted that “we have been accused of being arrogant; the people feel that way, and we have to regain their trust and their confidence.”

Whereas on the other hand, Steve Kent also reiterated the Tory legacy in his speech while placing a special focus on his infant son, who was born just days before he jumped into the leadership race in July. Kent stressed that he will focus on building a better future for his son in the province. Meanwhile, Paul Davis’ speech stressed upon the 11-year legacy of Tory government, and vowed to keep it going. He alleged that “we, my friends are not a party driven by negativity like the Liberals,” adding that “we need a leader who believes in Newfoundland and Labrador. We need a leader who builds us up, and I am that leader.”
