A protest attended by almost 200 people took place in front of Dalhousie’s School of Dentistry on Friday, as protestors spoke against the university for mishandling a growing controversy surrounding sexually explicit Facebook posts made by 13 members of the school. Many protestors held signs reading “Dalhousie hates women” as they marched silently from the School of Dentistry to the Henry Hicks building.

Several protestors were wearing masks to express their belief that victims of sexualized violence must remain anonymous for their own safety. Although a representative of the organization behind the protest, the Avalon Sexual Assault Centre, Jackie Stevens, applauded Dalhousie for its efforts in tackling the issue, many weren’t so forgiving. One of the Protestants yelled “expel them!” while another said that “we are here to show solidarity and support for the women who were targeted by their colleagues in the School of Dentistry.” Stevens said into a megaphone that “we encourage the university to address this issue on all levels to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

According to an announcement by Dalhousie president, Richard Florizone, on Wednesday evening, the university is in consultation with some of the women involved in the case and it will follow a process of restorative justices, which involves the two sides coming to an agreement on appropriate punishment. Notably, no formal complaint has been lodged at this time. Additionally, Florizone confirmed that the accused men, due to graduate in the spring, will not graduate until the issue has been resolved one way or the other.
