Building inspector Marco Nando Antonellis arrested for taking bribes in Markham

Investigators working out of the York Regional Police Major Fraud Unit have charged a Town of Markham building inspector in connection with a fraud incident where illegal commissions were solicited in exchange for avoiding permit fines.

As the result of an investigation that began on Friday, October 29, 2010, investigators have charged a 36-year-old building inspector after money was demanded in exchange for avoiding permit-related fines after renovation construction took place in the Markham area. Compensation was solicited from at least two victims who had purchased investment properties and neglected to obtain proper building permits. More than $4,000 was solicited from victims who were advised that they would be avoiding larger fines from the Town of Markham. No money was exchanged.

So far, investigators have identified two victims but believe there may be more. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

CHARGES:

Mr. ANTONELLIS has been released from custody and will appear next before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Thursday, December 9, 2010.
