A Canadian advocacy coalition comprising 230 groups and 5,000 individual Canadians, Voices-Voix, has mentioned in a statement that Canada should expect a “failing grade” when the United Nations finishes its report on the Conservative government’s human rights record later this month. According to the group, the report by the UN Human Rights Committee will be released on July 23 and it will take notice of the federal government’s muzzling of scientists and public servants, treatment of veterans, intimidation of human rights advocates and increased surveillance of Canadians.

The first report of its kind in 10 years will inspect Canadian human rights in light of Canada’s obligation as a signatory to the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights. In its remarks, Voices-Voix highlighted that UN has already voiced its reservations on Canada’s failure to investigate the disappearances and deaths of indigenous women, the lack of effective policies to improve the lot of aboriginal communities, lapses in food security and increasing economic inequality across Canadian society as a whole.

The Secretary-General of Amnesty International Canada and a Voices-Voix member, Alex Neve, stated that “when we connect the dots and look at the sum total of changes, it’s clear that federal policies over the past decade have changed Canada dramatically when it comes to fundamental values such as upholding such critical human rights as free expression and non-discrimination.” Neve added that “the changes are deeply worrying but they are not irreversible, it is time to turn things around.”
