In a rare intervention into a usually political matter, Governor General David Johnston convened a forum at Rideau Hall on Tuesday morning, calling the Syrian refugee crisis a challenge and an opportunity for Canada. He stressed that the Syrian refugee crisis is a “defining moment for Canada,” adding that the public and private sectors should work together to address the challenge

In his remarks, Mr. Johnston stated that “Canada’s diverse, tolerant, multicultural society is one of our great strengths and perhaps our greatest contribution to the world.” He stressed that “that’s why it’s so important that we succeed in welcoming refugees. Again, what could be more fitting?” The forum had representatives from different provinces and cities, the private sector and the NGO community.

On the other hand, Immigration Minister John McCallum has urged that Canada’s response to the refugee crisis has to be seen as a national project rather than a partisan issue. He demanded the audience to keep in view Canada’s tradition of welcoming newcomers and vowed take it as a personal challenge to effectively communicating the developments related to bringing in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February. He stated that “we want to keep the momentum going, but there’s nothing that will turn the momentum off more than if people want to help, they don’t get an answer on the other end of the phone,” adding that “there is a momentum today, whether there will be momentum two weeks from today is not something we can take for granted.”
