In the summer of 1965, Paul Saltzman drove south from his home in Toronto to volunteer as a civil rights worker with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee to help with voter registration in Greenwood, Mississippi. In the course of his work, he was jailed, and later assaulted by Ku Klux Klan member Byron (Delay) De La Beckwith, the son of the man later convicted of murdering civil rights activist Medgar Evers. In 2006, Saltzman began returning to Mississippi to see how things had changed, and not changed; to make the award-winning documentary film ‘Prom Night in Mississippi;’ and to try to find Beckwith and explore if personal reconciliation was possible. Saltzman engaged Beckwith in an ongoing and non-violent communication, on film, spanning five years and five trips to Mississippi.
