Germaine Liu is one of Toronto’s most interesting and adventurous percussionists. Her solo performances often employ various extraneous objects and pay great attention to their interaction with parts of her traditional drum kit set-up. Germaine’s music is gestural and playful and very focused. Concept becomes king, but rarely does it hinder the overall outcome. A versatile player moving from conventional techniques to what seems like a world of chaos, Liu manages this seemingly wayward energy with ease and leaves enough room for chance that you are always on the verge. Come early for what may be a life changing experience, or at least a good riddle.
Future Machines, a new math rock trio led by bassist Matt Fong, digs into the avant shred zone. Tight rhythms, angular guitar notes & heavy bass rattle against each other. Quick changes snap one repetitious rabbit hole to the next. Droning bass notes provide a temporal plain for meandering guitar and drum conversations. Sounding electronic at times the trio battles with it’s own controlled spastic nature. Get wild. soundcloud.com/mattfong
NYC sax player Nonoko Yoshida makes her first appearance in Toronto to play a rare solo set. An active member of the downtown new york scene, she has played with Cyro Baptista, Ron Anderson’s PAK with Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins), as well as her own band Pet Bottle Ningen. Nonoko’s sax playing moves from blistering avant shred laced with pops & clicks, to more reserved intricate looping work, at times reminiscent of Pharaoh Sanders, beautiful phrases layered with harsh & emotionally raw passages. Yoshida is definitely an up and coming player to watch!
