Bollywood star Salman Khan won’t face trial within the 1998 blackbuck hunting case in Rajasthan on charges of rioting but underneath the Wildlife Protection Act, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday.

An apex court bench headed by Justice P. Sathasivam declined to simply accept the Rajasthan government’s plea that film star Salman Khan and 4 others ought to be tried for rioting underneath the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

The blackbuck shooting case goes back to 1998 during the shooting of the movie “Hum Saath Saath Hain”.

The state government had arrived at the apex court challenging the Rajasthan High Court order through which it’s authorised a lesser court to withdraw charges of rioting against Salman Khan and 4 others.

A complaint was filed towards Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Neelam, Tabu & Sonali Bendre on charges to be involved in hunting of protected blackbucks.

The actors were charged with poaching two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur in October 1998.
