Malawians Cry Out for Help in Devastating Disaster
Emmanuel Canada has been operating in Malawi for thirty-two years helping the poor, more than 83,000 people have been displaced and 56 people have died by the flash floods.
Emmanuel International Canada is asking Canadians for support to help provide urgent relief supplies.
Richard McGowan Executive Director of Emmanuel International Canada said,” This cyclone came at the end of the Malawian annual crop growing season, the floods have destroyed the hope of the anticipated bountiful harvest. Over half a million people have lost homes, crops, everything. The death toll continues to rise. Within the Zomba area, 31,000 people have been displaced and are being sheltered at relief centres (schools, churches, mosques etc). Nearly 800 of these people are within EI Canada PROMISE project areas stated,” McGowan.
At these shelters, inadequate sanitation facilities and compromised water sources increase risks. A danger of diseases such as cholera and malaria are especially concerning. These shelters include more than 120 pregnant/lactating women and children under 5 years of age who are participating in the PROMISE project.
The devastating cyclone that hit Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe may be the worst ever disaster to strike the African area, according to the UN has destroyed almost everything in its path, causing devastating floods, killing and injuring thousands of people and ruining crops. More than 2.6 million people could be affected across the three countries.,
Houses, roads and telegraph poles are completely submerged and the military is working to rescue people from the air, there has been a challenge to get supplies to the region because roads and bridges have been ripped up or have huge sinkholes in them.
