Some days, picking out what to wear is like deciding what you want to eat for lunch — is there a sampler option out there? To capitalize on all the great stuff in your closet (the unseasonal stuff, especially), we rely on clever layering tricks to get us through the winter.

Using our tips, you’ll be able to make your basic cardigans, sweaters, and button-ups feel like statement pieces — without looking like a bulldog.

Tone-on-tone dressing might seem tricky to pull off, but if you expand your categories (say, “warm tones” instead of just “pinks”), you’ll be able to pull off a solid look without it feeling costume-y.

Sea button-down, Timo Weiland oxblood sweater, Ann Demeulemeester coat, J.Crew pants, J.Crew bag, stylist’s own socks, ASOS glasses, rag & bone suede booties.

Throw a denim jacket under your overcoat for an unexpected layered look. Bonus trick: Swap in a leather, moto jacket instead, if you want a cool, downtown vibe.

If you’ve got one outrageous print, tone it down by layering up. Use some of the colors found in the print (in this case, shades of camel and a pop of lavender), and mix and match classic basics. It’s also a great way to bring spring-y pieces out of storage!

An unbuttoned oxford shirt is a great way to add a thin layer. As long as it’s thin enough, you can pile on as many patterns, textures, and hues as you like!

Layer a short-sleeve tee over a long-sleeved one for extra warmth and structure. We love the look of tops in more luxe fabrics, like silk.

The key to making skirts over pants work is to make sure the pants and the skirt are in a similar, drape-y fabric and tone. A flippy leather skirt works well over a silky pair of track pants. Keep the sporty theme going with a girly baseball jacket!

Zara floral shirt, Timo Weiland leather skirt, Madewell baseball jacket, J.Crew track pants, ASOS booties, stylist’s own hat.

Dig out those polo shirts! It makes an awesome, low-key undershirt for your winter sweaters. Just treat it as you would any button-down! Our stylist also made a white coat a little more splashy by pinning on some mismatched stud earrings — smart!

Madewell polo shirt, Whit sweater, rag & bone overcoat, Madewell trousers, Happy Socks socks, Generic Man oxfords, Bing Bang earrings.

For an interesting take on colorblocking, try pairing summery shorts on top of tights in a different color, with socks and solid-colored booties. It’s a way to lengthen the lifespan of your more lightweight pieces (plus — a chance for you to show off those legs).

Timo Weiland turtleneck, Madewell lace shorts, Marni blazer, Riess hat, Hue tights, Hue socks, rag & bone booties, Bing Bang necklace, Monica Sordo, cuff.
