When it comes to Reed Krakoff’s designs, our minds bring us to visions of the Boxer and polished, streamlined handbags of the like. But punk? Maybe not our initial reaction. However, with the New York designer set to launch a new jewelry line this week called Punk Glass, we’re willing to think outside the box(er). Forgoing some of the more extreme grittiness that “punk” suggests, Krakoff’s new collection of necklaces, bracelets, and rings does the ’80s and ’90s trend in a way that’s all his own.
Inspired by the bits of glass that were left over from Italian glassmaker Seguso, who Krakoff worked with to create the bottle for his fragrance, the designer found a new purpose for these lovely leftovers of “raw, uncut semiprecious and precious stones.” As previewed in WWD today, the jewelry uses these precious stones in a less-then-precious way — wrapped in gold and brass metal wire as they cling to thick golden cuffs or hang from leather cords.
While the unique and jagged shapes of the collection’s featured stones are far from the clean lines of the Krakoff handbags, they act as just the right amount of egde to perfectly complement them. Expect the jewelry to make its official debut this Wednesday, priced between $590 and $990. (WWD)
