Is there life around Jupiter?
A space probe is embarking on a mission to investigate the possibility of life on three moons orbiting Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. The European Space Agency’s (ESA) probe, named Juice (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), will study the moons Callisto, Europa and Ganymede, which are made of ice but may have liquid water beneath their thick icy crust.
The probe will be launched from French Guiana and is expected to arrive at Jupiter in 2031. The mission will end in 2034 when the fuel runs out. The Technical University in Delft, Netherlands, has built instruments to aid the mission, including one that can accurately determine the spacecraft’s speed and location. Juice is only the third ever mission to Jupiter, following the American satellite Galileo and the Juno, which is also American.
