BBC angry at Twitter for calling the broadcaster a state-funded organization

The BBC is displeased with Twitter‘s classification of the broadcaster as a government-funded media organization. The BBC asserts its independence and funding by the public through an annual statutory license fee of £159 per household, which accounted for 71% of its total revenue last year.

Although the broadcaster also receives over £90 million annually from the British government for BBC World Service, the BBC stresses that such contributions do not affect its independence. The label is only applied to the account @BBC, while @BBCNews and @BBCWorld lack it. Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, has discussed the issue with the BBC, stating that media organizations wrongly claim to be impartial. Recently, an American radio broadcaster received the same label from Twitter but Musk admitted that the first label was not correct.
