The SPLA training in a past rehearsal eventFighting has erupted in Mapel town in Western Bahr el Ghazal State (WBGS), caused by the former Peter Gadet’s forces who are undertaking military integration in Mapel SPLA base of Dakumo while civilians were celebrating the New Year day.

According to an eye witness, the town came under heavily armed platoon attacks on Sunday evening at around 3:00 pm by the forces following a disagreement on 31st December 2011 between a motorbike rider and one of the former Gadet loyalists who hired a motorbike but failed to pay for the service.

The militia was formed by renegade Peter Gadet since they are the only new solders brought to the area for reintegration into SPLA following the agreement reached with Gadet in August 2011.

Mr. Michael Mayen Atem, a local police officer told Gurtong that, the natives fled the town before the rebels stopped aggression at around 5:00 pm heading to their base camp (Dakumo one)

“The town has since remained calm to date while the police officers are investigating the source of the standoff,” Atem said.

The question still remains if the fighting in Mapel has any connection to the Luo Nuer attack on Murle tribe in Pibor last Saturday

Gadet who complied with President Salva Kiir’s amnesty granted to the South Sudan rebels during the Country’s Independence Day on 9th July 2011; began sending his forces to SPLA training camps last year in August for reintegration of which the team in Mapel have failed to lay down their arms for reintegration.

Since the forces arrived in Mapel last October, the area community has complained the lack of peace with the presence of the military.
