Speaking to journalists in De Havana Restaurant in Juba, Mathiang said that the objectives of the marathon include: instilling a national self-help through pro-active participation in fundraising for Al Sabah Children’s Hospital; Marketing Juba City by show-casting major sceneries, sights and hospitality; Developing a mentoring platform for aspiring South Sudanese athletes to participate in international sporting activities; and Enhancing regional cooperation by incorporating expertise from other East African community especially in prospecting for International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)’s recognition.     

The event is set to commence on the 28th of April this year with the theme “Healthy Children for a Healthy Nation” Registration for participants starts from the 5th – 31st of March at Marketing Solutions office in Hai Cinema Mall opposite Quality Hotel.

However journalists were told nothing is for free. An individual who would like to participate will pay, 50 South Sudanese pounds (SSP), cooperate participation 2,000 SSP of ten members.

Junior and senior citizens will run for 5km, beginners will run for 10km and professionals will run for 21km.  

“There will be money for the winners. We will announce the prices before the kick off,” Mathiang assured the participants.

The Contact Person for Marketing Solutions, Jack Odongo said the event will cost worth thousands of pounds.

“The budget for the entire event goes to 430, 000 SSP which at the moment Speed Insurance has given us almost half of the amount. But we are still in negotiations with other partners,” said Odongo.

The General Operation Manager of Speed Insurance South Sudan, James Kuria said the Company is ready to contribute in the healthy development of the nation. Speed Insurance which is South Sudanese owned since 2008, contributed 200,000 SSP for the event. 

A number of participants are expected to show up; some government officials have already confirmed their participation including the Minister of Youth and Sports in the national government, Dr. Cirino Hiteng Ofuho, Deputy Governor of Central Equatoria State, Manassah Lomole Waya, Central Equatoria State Minister of Sports and the Mayor of Juba City, Mohammed El Haj Baballa.

The event manager said they have partnered with the Paul Tergat Foundation towards this endeavour targeting enhanced socio-economic development through sports mentorship while catalyzing communal support and responsibility.
