JICA, S. Sudan Signs $ 6 Million Deal On Media Development

(L-R) JICA Representative and Information Undersecretary George Garang signing the deal at the Information Ministry [©Gurtong]Hanatani Atsushi, the JICA Representative at the signing ceremony exclusively told Gurtong that, the six million USD are to be used for equipping the South Sudan Television (SSTV) and the Radio stations by buying cameras, recorders and other instruments. 

He also said that the money will be used for capacity building in the television and radio institutions by employing technical experts in areas of production, and train journalists. 

While speaking to the press, Atsushi said that, “we are supporting South Sudan Television, to become an independent media house that will contribute in the growth of this society.”

The move is also to boost the mutual cooperation between the two countries; South Sudan and Sudan. He added that the media plays a great role in post conflict countries like South Sudan in restoring its stability and dignity. 

Atsushi underscored the role played by the media in connecting countries and promoting international relationships and promote mutual understanding that significantly enhances development.  

Meanwhile, the South Sudanese Minister of Information and Broadcasting Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin underscored JICA’s contribution in boosting the State media while describing it as “tremendous.” 

He said the project will renew the mutual cooperation between the two countries and portraying the commitment of JICA in helping the peoples of South Sudan. 

“It is important that communication functions are put in place in order to build a country on democratic process,” Dr. Marial said. “There is a need for effective communication,” he added. 

Marial pointed out that, Japan is also involved in capacity building in different areas in the country like the construction of roads and bridges. He also said that, the media bill is underway to the National Assembly for ratification.
