Together with women from other countries, the seven women were trained on how to electrify light by use of solar energy source which is less expensive compared to local energy sources like charcoal that is commonly used in South Sudan, Esther Ikere said.

This was a joint initiative between the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and the Ministry of Gender to train women on solar engineering.

“The project’s aim is to have rural electrification and reducing the cost of electricity in the rural areas,” Ikere said.

Coumba Ceesay pointed out that, the initiative is a rural program aimed at creating potential on intensifying usage of solar energy. “The trained women will be building the capacity of others,” she said.

She reiterated United Nations’ commitment in promoting the initiative, saying it will provide solar panels to the women. “The UN will continue to work closely to ensure that the process does not stop,” she promised.
