Water Provision In All State Capitals To Be Privatized

He made the statement to the press yesterday at his office where he said they are going to advertise for at least four companies to take over the provision of water so as to meet the Millennium Development Goals. 

This comes at a time when South Sudan for the first time as a country is set to attend a Ministerial discussion in Washington set for the 19th of this month on the provision of clean water and ensuring proper sanitation.

“We are going to privatize water provision in the ten state capitals,” he said.

He added that he has tasked his deputy to procure four different companies. Juba which is the national capital will be handled by a Chinese company currently being engaged.

The Ministry revealed that the talks will commence around June this year and that they will involve the Ministry of Justice and that of Finance in the process.

At least in about two years’ time they should be able to provide safe and clean drinking water for the people of South Sudan. The minister cited finance as one of the main challenges hindering the implementation.

Currently, 9.3% and 36.8% of the rural and urban areas respectively have access to clean sanitation. The Minister said that they are set to improve sanitation to 14% for rural areas and 42% for urban areas by 2014.

Meanwhile access to clean water is said to be 34% for both urban and rural areas. He said that his ministry is targeting 40% for rural and 45% for urban areas by 2014.

Nevertheless, the Minister has ordered for the arrest of those who collect water from the river using water tankers that haven’t met quality standards before selling.
