A debate on the contentious land issue that is on its third week at the Central Equatoria State Legislative Assembly has been informed that a clique of powerful individuals and key political figures are involved in questionable land deals in the state.
The state legislators have vowed to crush the cartels, saying the enactment of a land law will address the issues in totality.
A report on land use in Juba presented by the ad hoc Committee for Land to the Assembly uncovered malpractices including misuse of power by leaders to grab land from ordinary civilians, corruption during land allotment by the State Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing and interference by powerful politicians on land policies.
The legislators have petitioned the Ministry of Infrastructure to work on a Land Bill within six months to address the inadequacies.
The Assembly has also recommended the dissolution of the Juba Town Planning Board saying it has no policies to administer the planning of the town and has failed to execute its powers in correcting land malpractices in the town among other resolutions.
