He further said that the residents started to pursue the raiders yesterday morning but sources told them that it is impossible for the cows to be recovered.

The MP for Nyirol North County Khor Gal said there were some rumours about the movement of David Yau Yau forces toward the greater Akobo counties.

According to the MP, Nyirol County Commissioner had informed the state government that there were some armed men who raided Thol village close to the county headquarter.

“The police and the organized forces of SPLA are after the cattle but we do not have any communication with them because of lack of network facilities in the county,” he said.

He said that the number of the raided cattle is not clear but two cattle camps where raided by the armed group.

Other sources reported the figure to be almost 2,000 and this was the first reported case of cattle raiding after the rainy season since the area has been calm for the last three months.

However Khor said that the Murle are supporting the rebel group because Yau Yau is against the disarmament operation in Jonglei State.

“The people who are killing people here, looting cattle and abducting children have economics reasons, while David Yau Yau has political reasons of fighting against the government. How are these related now?” he asked.

He explained that the raiders, who are also abducting children “are getting guns and ammunition from the rebels to suffice their economic agenda”.

Murle leaders have denied that their ethnic group is linked to the rebel group and the MP blamed the SPLA forces of disarmament for having failed to disarm the Murle youth who escaped disarmament in April.

“Now SPLA is saying they are not able to disarm them in the wet season, what is the right time for them to be disarmed? During the dry season, SPLA said they were not able to reach the Murle youth who escaped, and now they say there is water everywhere, which time is the best for them to disarm Murle?,” Bol asked.

After the latest raid, Twic East Commissioner said that “lack of rifles” in the hands of cattle herders had meant that they were not able to protect or retrieve any of the stolen cattle.
