They said that the celebration was for women to think and reflect on their past achievements and see how to move forward.

Concerns over equal pay, equal treatment and opportunities were raised for the women to be able to contribute towards the development.

Meanwhile the deputy minister of General Education and Instruction, Rebecca Joshua Okwaci told the media that there have been a number of prominent women in the country.

She expressed a lot of suffering women faced in an effort to see the birth of South Sudan. The deputy minister further said that the women voluntarily joined the army while some of them were also helping in taking care of the children.

Madam Joshua said that some of the women were also part of the technical members of the negotiating team.

She continued saying that women fought for the 25% affirmative action and that the majority of the voters during the referendum were women.

Nevertheless, she said that they are stepping up to fight for 50% affirmative action in the country.

“We are talking about 50% and we will pursue seriously because if we are more than 60% contributing to the stability of this country, then we deserve that,” she said.

She also told the media that they are reminding themselves of how to move forward and work towards combating violence against women.

Nevertheless, she said that the women have their rights in the constitution as per the bill of rights. She added that it is important for the women to work hard to get what belongs to them.

The National celebrations of the International Women’s Day will be in Jonglei State on Friday.
