The State Speaker Emmanuel Ambrose Ocholimoi announced the decision to members and the legislators warmly welcomed the announcement with ululation.
The members encouraged women to come up and support their increase to political positions though some of their counterparts are reluctant to welcome the initiative by the SPLM party highest organ.
The SPLM’s Political Bureau has proposed an increase in the quotas allocated for women and youth in the SPLM Constitution to enhance their representation and participation in party institutions.
This came as the Bureau continued its meeting with discussions on the draft of the SPLM basic documents such as the manifesto and constitution.
Secretary General Cde Pagan Amum announced late Friday that Bureau members had agreed to increase the quota for women from 25 percent to 35 percent and youth representation from 10 percent to 20 percent.
“South Sudan cannot be free if 50 percent of its population continues to be subjugated,” Amum said.
Figures from the 2008 census indicate that women constitute more than half of the population of South Sudan.
The Bureau’s proposal in the draft of the SPLM Constitution coincided with celebrations across the country to mark International Women’s Day.
The meeting opened on Wednesday with review of the party’s Manifesto, which members passed on Thursday after introducing minor changes.
