A total of 1,564 candidates are expected to sit for the examinations in Unity State.

The State Acting Governor who is also the State Minister of Health Dr. Changkel Banak Riak encouraged the candidates to work very hard to the level that may make them take the lead in this year’s examination.

“The number of the students we have this year is quite a good number if they all work hard to pass the examination,” said Riak.

Riak added that 88 per cent of the total candidates are male and only 12 per cent are female candidates and there is a possibility to increase the female enrolment in the coming years.

“We have been visiting the examination centers to encourage the candidates and to motivate them in their examination,” he added.

The State Education Minister Angelo Chol Dong Wei said there are 1,373 boys and 191 girls registered in the 10 centers across the nine counties.

“Despite many challenges that we are now facing, we have managed to start the examination on time. This is the first examination for the secondary school certificates to be organized in the new Republic,” said the minister, referring it to the shortage of examination papers in some centers like Rubkona County Center which started the first examination paper late after making copies.

The minister did not give reason for the shortage of the examination papers but a close aid to the ministry said many of the candidates did not have index numbers and some have not even got their names and the ministry has worked and sent all the missing candidates names back to Juba but their examination papers were not included.

The State ministry of Education through a directive from the National Ministry of General Education is make copies to those centers that did not receive their papers while waiting to receive the remaining subjects from Juba.

“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan should improve in the coming examination for the years 2014, also there are mistake that is because it’s the first time to have the examinations prepared in South Sudan,” said Veronica Nyakuma Tap, a candidate.

A student, Maliah Ruach Dang said: “It is a big mistake to realize that the state has received examination papers that are not enough. This is very bad and it should not repeat itself in the future.”

Security has been tightened during the examination period.
