UN Peacekeepers Contribute Towards Agriculture Development In Jonglei

Speaking to the Media this morning, the commander of Nepalese army in UNMISS camp who arrived to South Sudan three month ago said he discovered South Sudan as having a lot of fertile land which is not being used for agricultural purposes.

“I see a lot of fertile land and the land is not occupied for the agriculture purposes. So we brought more vegetable seeds and a lot of plant seeds from Nepal. We have grown those seeds in our camp now we have brought some of these plants to the state central nursery in Bor,” said the commander.

He said that they have more seedling in their camp planted that are ready to be distributed to residents of Bor town.

“Later on we have more thousands and thousands baby plants in our camp that we planted and we want to distribute them to the local people,” he said.

He said that they wanted to show a good example that Nepalese and South Sudanese have the same fertile land for agriculture.

“We have a good future in agriculture so I want to share this experience with the
local people and I want to give some example starting by giving baby plants to the local people,” he said.

He said that their support will be the continuous and the incoming commander will take over and offer good support to South Sudanese in Jonglei state, adding that they will be visiting Jonglei to supervise the local population.

The commander said that they need to see South Sudan in good agricultural development state in future.

The State Acting Director for Forestry, Deel Anyieth Atem, has said Nepalese army from UNMISS peacekeeping force is helping them in agricultural practice and had trained prison service officers before their cooperation with UNMISS peacekeepers so that they could be able to convey the message to the community.

He said nursery was established in 2011 and the area covered is only two Pedants.

Anyieth said objectives of the farm is for training institution students that are coming from Universities especially agriculturalists as well as extension officers and community based organizations.

Anyieth said that distribution of the seeds will be possibly this week.

The state Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Mayen Ngor Atem said that he is very impressed with the great partnership and cooperation with UNMISS peacekeepers for the support they are offering to the community.

Ngor said that State Central Nursery will boost agricultural activities within Jonglei state as the centre is going to be used as training place for local people adding that Nepalese army will contribute much more in the training process.

The Napalese force reserve company within UNMISS has provided baby plants and seeds of Pumpkin, Cauliflower, Okra, Tomato, Cucumber, and Zucchini.
