The driver of a vehicle that claimed 22 lives in an accident was driving the truck with an expired license. The tragic incident took place in Pinetown on Thursday night as the driver was taken into custody. The truck crashed into four minibus taxis and a car.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate, drivers of heavy duty vehicles do not have the 21-day grace period for expired license. The driver’s license reportedly expired on August 31st.

CCTV footage shows the speeding truck crashing into the car and two taxis that were running through a green traffic light at an intersection. Allegedly, the truck driver lost control of his vehicle after the brakes failed on Field’s Hill. The driver has been identified as a 23-year old Sanele Goodness May who now faces multiple charges including culpable homicide and negligent driving.

May – a Swaziland national – was in tears when he was brought into Court F at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. The case has been postponed until September 16 while May remains in custody at the Pinetown police station holding cells.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said punishing guilty drivers does not serve the purpose of discouraging such reckless acts. Peters said it is necessary to punish the owners of trucks involved in such accidents. The number of people killed in road accidents is rapidly increasing. Peters said losing 80 people in road accidents during last seven days is too much.
