Ateny Wek Ateny, spokesman in the office of the President told journalists in Juba that; “the mediators have shown their optimism” on a possible agreement by the two warring parties on cessation of hostilities and other terms.

According to the mediators, “their [political detainees] problem should not be taken to deter the parties from seizing hostilities,” Ateny said.

Government is currently detaining 11 senior government officials accused together with the ex Vice President Dr. Riek Machar of masterminding a coup last month in Juba.

Peace talks brokered by the IGAD between the government and the rebels in an effort to end the current political tension in the fledgling nation early this week had hit a dead lock following failure by the two parties to agree on issues presented on the table.

As government insists it only needs preconditioned talks the rebels said they can only accept cessation of hostilities with the government if 11 political detainees currently by government are released.

There is however, mounting pressure on the two sides from the International Community with the US of latest weighing possible measures for sanctions on South Sudan if the two sides insist to end violence.

The two sides are currently locked into a military fight in the Greater Upper Nile region and other parts of the country worsening the humanitarian situation further.

So far according to the UN close to 200,000 people have been displaced and 1,000 others are killed following the escalation of the violence.
