According to the state Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Hon. Martin Lorika Lojam upon his return from Ikwoto to Torit, says that the disease has forced cattle owners to flee for fear of the disease spreading.

While addressing the press, he warned of some of the symptoms that cattle owners should watch out for which includes, swelling of the glands under the animals’ ears, bleeding nostrils, bloody diarrhea and urine.

The Minister said similar symptoms have also been noticed in cattle in Loturtur in Lokwa community within the same County of Ikwoto.

He advised the cattle keepers to remain watchful over must isolate sick animals upon detection to minimize the spread.

This comes just months after the state Animal Resources and Fisheries Ministry in Torit announced that it had received a supply of veterinary drugs for all counties in the state.

The Ministry with support from the United Nations-Food Agricultural Organization (UN-FAO) launched a vaccination campaign against similar disease (ECF) targeting 3,500 cattle within Torit County.

The move followed the disease’s threats in the region as the effort sought to restrict it from spreading over the County and beyond.

The East Coast Fever is one of the major disease constraints to cattle development and is well known to local farmers, stockmen and veterinarians.

Control of the disease is feasible but requires careful planning and any tick control measures must consider other local tick-borne diseases.
