As the war of words between Umno and Pas continue, the latest update on this on going controversy is that PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu the man at he centre of this debate today gave the Utusan Malaysia Malay-language daily 24 hours to tender an apology or face legal action over a report alleging he had insulted the nation’s heroes.

To rewind, Utusan carried a report  of PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu  praising communism that  promptly led to a war of words between Umno and PAS. Sabu was alleged to have called during a ceramah in Tasik Gelugor, Mat Indera, the man who attacked and killed 25 policemen and their families in the 1950 Bukit Kepong tragedy, an independent fighter.

They are now arguing that Mohamad Sabu’s praise to Mat Indera has hurt the families of the sacrificed policemen.

However with no clear answers to some key questions, the verdict on Mohamded Sabu still remains. While popular response has been of hurt and anger at Sab’s u remarks, the answer to whether Mat indera was indeed a an independent fighter and whether his attack on the police station was against the British government at time still lacks credible answers from any quarter and thus it has become difficult to make any conclusion.

Without clarifying the doubts, all parties will continue making their own arguments and even DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has found it confusing.
