Despite the growing US pressure, Pakistan will not plan surgical strikes against Haqqani network. The decision was taken after the top military commanders of the country agreed on the need to calm down the situation between the two countries.
In a special meeting, chaired by Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, the decision was taken. The meeting was also attended by Corps Commanders.
“We have already conveyed to the US that Pakistan cannot go beyond what it has already done,” the military official said.
In the meeting the commanders pledged to resist US demands as they asked for a military operation against the Haqqanis in North Waziristan. The meeting also discussed possible implications of one-sided military action by the US on Pakistani soil.
This was holiday when the meeting took place which “reflected the seriousness of the crisis”. This was created after the serious allegations by US officials. But in the meantime the “de-escalation efforts” were being considered.
“Escalation is harmful. In the cost-benefit analysis, there appears to be no benefit of a confrontation” and “there was nothing to suggest that the army had agreed to act against the Haqqani network under US pressure,” the officials said.
