Ex-minister of transport Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik has been ordered by the high court on Friday to enter the defence for the case of alleged cheating in the cabinet.

Judge of High Court, Dr. Ahmadi Asnawi made the announcement when he checked that the prosecution has enough evidence to file a case against the ex-transport minister. Dr. Ling is now facing charges of fraud and cheating the government over the Port Klang Free Zone Project (PKFZ) adding up to a total of RM 1.08 million.

68-year-old Dr. Ling is accused of nondisclosure of interest amount on 999.5 acres of land acquired for the Port Klang Free Zone Project. Due to the interest on the land, the port authorities paid Kuala Dimensi RM 1.8 billion which landed the government into paying extra RM 270 million for the land. Held accountable under the 418 Section of the Penal Code, Dr. Long can be facing a minimum of seven years of imprisonment with a huge fine. He might also be entitled to both if the need arises.

At the same time, Dr. Ling has been accused of cheating the cabinet and knowingly withholding information from the government of the additional 7.5% interest rate each year on the piece of land acquired by the government. For these two charges, Dr. Ling is facing a maximum of five years of imprisonment and a fine, which could also be both.
