The Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh announced on Monday morning in Lok Sabha that he intends to favour the resolution proposed by the UN against Sri Lanka over human rights claims.

He expressed his opinion after increased pressure from the opposition political parties and said that he will favour the resolution only if it fits his objectives, keeping in mind the future of Tamils in India. He also informed the parliament that he was yet to receive the final draft of the resolution proposed by UN Human Rights Council and that a decision can only be derived at once they have the draft in hand.

He also said, “We are inclined to vote in favour of the resolution if the resolution will cover our objectives namely the achievement of a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is based on equality, dignity, justice and self-respect”.

Speaking of the statement issued by the PM, the opposition party leader, Karunanidhi said, “We welcome the announcement (by PM) if it is true. We will wait for the final decision”. He also informed the media that higher officials of his party intend to meet tomorrow and discuss how to take the matter further.

The party leader has already announced a fast on the 22nd March in an attempt to ask the people of India to support the resolution. He said, “The fast will be held seeking India should come forward to support the resolution which calls for investigating war crimes by the Sri Lankan government which continued to kill Tamils even after the end of the war”.
