An aggregate of 559 students received the highest grade in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, as per the result announcement made on Wednesday.
The number of students receiving A + in all subjects who appeared for SPM examination in 2010 were 406, which have risen to 559 in only a year. The results were announced by the Director General of Education Datuk Seri Abd Ghaffar Mahmud, who also specified that amongst the high achievers, 509 students belonged to national secondary schools whereas the remaining 53 candidates belonged to other schools. Comparing the figures to the results of the previous year, he said that in 2010, 363 high achievers were from public schools and 40 were from other schools. He also informed that the overall grade point average of the performance of the students is on an increasing rate since past 4 years.
He said, “The overall SPM achievement for 2011 improved from the year before, with the National Average Grade at 5.04 compared with 5.19 in 2010. The overall achievement of schools also improved, as the number of schools in the ‘excellent’ and ‘good’ categories increased by 13 and 60 schools respectively. Nevertheless, the gap between the achievements of urban and rural candidates widened by 0.09.”
