The Supreme Court took note of the perjury accusation against the Interior Minister Rehman Malik for proving false information and for holding dual nationality of Pakistan and UK while filing the nomination papers in order to fight the Senate election.
On Monday, SC suspended the Senate membership of Rehman Malik for holding British citizenship which he had obscured. He claimed that he had renounced his British nationality in 2008, but media reports revealed that he had actually filed application for renunciation in May 29, 2012.
The court’s decision also disqualified Malik to act as Federal Minister but official sources said the Prime Minister would be named as “adviser” to circumvent the court verdict. “After the court’s decision, Mr. Rehman Malik cannot remain a minister but can be appointed adviser to the PM. You have to be a member of the Senate or the National Assembly to be a minister,” a lawyer said.
Malik was unable to provide any credible evidence to prove that he had renounced his nationality in April 2008 and failed to provide sufficient documents to deny all the media reports.
Supreme Court had also suspended National Assembly membership of Farahnaz Ispahani last week. She was the PPP leader and wife of Former ambassador Husain Haqqani and her membership was suspended for holding American nationality and renouncing allegiance to Pakistan while taking pledge as American citizen.
According to reports, Malik had found guilty and expressed regrets over what he called a “misunderstanding” created by the formation of a cooperative team to investigate the dodge and placed himself at the leniency of the court.
A new petition was submitted on Monday that included 14 more names of other legislators who are holding dual nationalities.
