Pakistan has successfully test fired on Tuesday, a 700 km-range Hatf-VII cruise missile capable of delivering nuclear as well as conventional warheads and has stealth capabilities that can hit targets deep within India. This was the fifth missile tested by Pakistan since last month after India tested a new long-range missile capable of delivering atomic warheads six weeks ago. The Hatf-VII was depicted by the military as an indigenously developed multi-tube cruise missile system.

Pakistan and India have regularly conducted missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998. The two neighbors have engaged in an arms race since the partition of Pakistan from India in 1947. Pakistan says its missile tests will aid to strengthen its national security.

The test was performed in the presence of top military at an unrevealed location as the military said in a statement, “The test will consolidate Pakistan’s strategic deterrence capability and further strengthen national security”. The missile is described as a “low flying, terrain-hugging” weapon with “high maneuverability, pinpoint accuracy and radar avoidance features.” President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani acclaimed the successful test.

In another statement, it was also revealed that this missile has the features of the most modern cruise missile technology of Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) and Digital Scene Matching and Area Co-relation (DSMAC) that increases its effectiveness and exactitude.

India had successfully launched Agni V missile which is capable of delivering nuclear having a range of more than 3,100 miles on April 20. It had the capacity of hitting anywhere in regional military rival, China. India’s strategic priorities are focused more on China, whereas Pakistan is still anxious about its eastern neighbor.
